Baby Talk: At The Spa

August 13, 2024

Saratoga, Race 6 – Thursday, August 15, 2024

By The 2YO EdgeMan

SAR6:081524 – One and 1/16th mile on the Turf. 11 fillies are entered, 10 will start. The number of FTSers is six, one has started once, and three have done the racing thing two times.

#4 – Competitive Market (5/1) – Chad Brown’s (M = 17.7; FTS = 15.2%) first of two is a FTS filly by First-Crop sire Authentic (three winners from 31 starters). His mom, Cajun Delta Dawn, is by Kantharos and she won half of the eight races that she started (all on dirt) and banked $488K. Also, she was a first-out winner in June of her 2YO season at Gulfstream Park. She’s tossed three other foals of racing age, but nothing very successful. Klaravich Stables plunked down $410K for this gal last year as a yearling (18/92). Chad’s had this gal working since early June here at SAR and has put her through ten morning drills (38 furlongs), however, her times have not been overly fast. Frankie Dettori will show her around the turf course.

#5 – She’s Got Will (10/1) – Another Newbie sire – War of Will (five wins from 25 starters) – sends this filly out for her debut race. She’s out of a mare by Dialed In, Ruffenuff, who found the Winner’s Circle ten times in the 25 races that she attempted and earned $205K in purse money. She did win a minor stakes race in her initial race at 2YO at Northlands Park and this is her first foal. Mark Casse (M = 14.3%; FTS = 0/19) will sling the saddle across this gal, along with another (read below). This runner sold to owners Gary and Cecil Barber for $160K last September at KEE as a yearling (13/67). In prep for her bow today, she’s worked nine times (her most recent four here at The Spa) for a total of 37 furlongs. She did earn a small bullet when she traveled three panels back in May at Palm Meadows Training Center in 36.5 seconds (1/7). Dylan Davis will be her reinsman.

#9 – Dr Glick (4/1) – The second Chad Brown (M = 17.7; FTS = 15.2%) runner is firster by Constitution (ALL = 14.6%; FTS = 17.0%) and was thrown by Into Mischief mare, More Mischief, that was 4/10 (all wins on dirt) with $255K in prize money. She won in her second start while a baby at SAR and this is her first foal. Today’s competitor is a homebred for Wise Racing and she’s worked eleven times (39 furlongs), with her last ten coming here at SAR. Her best was probably four drills back in mid-July when she went a half mile from the gate in 47.8 (6/147), however she did not keep up with her stablemate. Flavin gets the call to ride.

#10 – Wonderland (7/2 ML fav) – This FTS filly is the second entrant for Mark Casse in this affair and she was sired by Medaglia d’Oro (ALL = 14.6%; FTS = 11.4%). Mama, Miss Summer Miss, is by the late More Than Ready and she was 3/16 on the track, bringing $220K home to her owners. She’s tossed two other foals of racing age – her 3YO gelding has won twice in nine tries for $103K, including a win at age two in his third start at GP. Today’s runner RNAed for $235K as a yearling but came back in April of this year in Ocala to sell for $385K as a 2YO (2/13). After four morning spins in early May at Casse’s Training Center, he shipped her to upstate NY for five more, putting 36 furlongs under her. Her first work at The Spa may have been her best move going four poles on 6/22/24 in 48.04 (1/22). Jose will be her guide.

Final Analysis – My pick is #4 Competitive Market. Brown is a master of these route races on the lawn for babies and Frankie is at home on the grass. I like that mama won as a two-year-old in her first start and was a terrific racemare. I would have liked it if she had worked on the turf, but she has not done so.

Saratoga has two baby races carded on Saturday – Races #1 and #2. I’m looking forward to taking a look at them, but afraid that I may not be able to get an article posted. However, keep an eye on PastTheWire.com – they’ll have lots of good content coming.
