HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Adam Parker, Suzette Parker and trainer Joe Orseno’s lightly raced And Uwish realized his potential in Sunday’s $70,000 Successful Native Handicap at Gulfstream Park, easing Orseno’s disappointment in favored stablemate Extendo’s fifth place finish.
While Extendo, the even-money favorite who ran in the Grade 1 Jaipur last time out, brought an extensive resume into Sunday’s 5 ½-furlong dash for 3-year-olds and up on Tapeta, And Uwish blossomed in only his sixth career start, prevailing by a neck over Sosua Summer.
“I always knew he could run,” Orseno said. “This horse, we’ve always been excited about him.”
And Uwish recovered from an early bobble to stalk Biz Biz Buzz and Extendo as they vied for pacesetting honors during a lively 21.79-second first quarter of a mile on their way to completing a half-mile in 44.46. Jockey Edgard Zayas asked And Uwish for his run, and the 4-year-old gelding responded to pass the tiring pacesetters and withstand an inside challenge by Sosua Summer.
And Uwish, who won his 2025 debut off a 13-month layoff before finishing off-the-board in his last start, gave Zayas his third feature victory of the July 4th Weekend.
“He kind of stumbled a bit out of the gate but he recovered very quick and got in a good position. I think the post position really helped him today. He was much calmer,” Zayas said. “Last race, I was expecting him to run better, but he was a little cranked up and he broke through the gate. He was so nervous, he didn’t fire like we expected. Today he was much calmer, got a good setup and he finished up really nice.”
The Florida-bred son of Mshawish, who had won one of his first three starts before going on an extended hiatus, ran 5 ½-furlongs in 1:02.46. Sosua Summer, who cut the corner into the stretch under Jose Morelos, finished a quarter of a length ahead of late closing Louie The Sun King. Extendo faded to fifth while conceding between two and eight pounds to his seven rivals as the 124-pound highweight. And Uwish carried 117 pounds and returned $12.20.
“Extendo, we brought him back from Monmouth to run here. We got him here and I missed some training with him,” Orseno said. “This horse came out of that last race with a little tiny hit mark on the splint bone. We fixed it and I think that was all that was holding him back. There’s nowhere to go but up from here.”
Mandatory Payout of Rainbow 6 Scheduled for July 13
A mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool has been scheduled for Sunday, July 13 at Gulfstream Park.
In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
However, on mandatory payout days the entire pool is paid out to bettors holding tickets with the most winners. The previous mandatory payout returned $4,220.26 June 29.
The Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be estimated at $125,000 when the Royal Palm Meet resumes with a live nine-race program Friday. First race post time is 12:50 p.m.
Friday’s Rainbow 6 spans Races 4-9. The feature comes in Race 8, an optional claiming allowance going one mile and 70 yards on the all-weather Tapeta that drew six 3-year-old fillies including stakes winner Special Aviator and stakes-placed Miss Mary Nell and La Gioconda.
The Race 9 finale is a maiden special weight for fillies and mares 3 and up sprinting six furlongs on the main track. Leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. entered the pair of 3-year-olds Bon Vivant, who adds blinkers after being beaten a nose going seven furlongs May 10 in her second start, and Sunset Harbor, runner-up in her June 14 debut against elders, also at seven-eighths.
