Trainer Tom Albertrani is high on his filly Berned, and thinks she is of Breeders’ Cup quality. While she didn’t make The Breeders’ Cup she is at Los Alamitos for the Grade 1 Starlet, another prestigious race held over from the sadly departed Hollywood Park. In 2009 Albertrani took The American Oaks with east coast shipper Gozzip Girl by over 3 lengths and he is taking another shot today.
I’ve been high on this filly myself, and I think she fits, although home team horse American Girl, trained by Bob Baffert, along with Union Strike and Tapped are far from slouches. Berned will be ridden by white hot Norberto Arroyo Jr., fresh off leading rider honors at Del Mar, and that has to help. Norberto is riding lights out.
