A Statement from Peta Regarding the re-opening of Santa Anita

May 14, 2020

Following is a statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s lifting of the racing ban at Santa Anita Park:

“Now that gambling has been prioritized over public health, the death toll—for horses and humans—must not rise. Horses died during training at Santa Anita Park even after the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health had suspended racing. If another Thoroughbred is killed, racing should be ended for equine health, regardless of COVID-19.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment or abuse in any other way”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there’s any further information that I can provide.
