Below is an overview of Friday’s Pick Six at Santa Anita.
Race 4 (6 entered): 2-year-old filly maidens kick things off going 4 ½ furlongs on the main track. Installed as the 8-5 favorite is La Ville Lumiere, a $475,000 auction buy at this year’s OBS March Sale of 2-year-olds in training. Trained by Michael McCarthy, La Ville Lumiere drew the rail and will have Kazushi Kimura aboard. Her main threat is Light Won Up (2-1), trained by Doug O’Neill, whose dam Factorofwon was a stakes winner. A $265,000 auction buy earlier this year, Light Won Up will have Antonio Fresu aboard. Both La Ville Lumiere and Light Won Up are daughters of City of Light.
Race 5 (8 entered): This restricted allowance at six furlongs on turf is led by 8-5 favorite Zeus’ War, who drew the rail for trainer Tim McCanna and will have Assael Espinoza aboard. The other main principal is Jerry’s Spirit (2-1), a winner of three straight who was claimed for $25,000 out of a win May 2. The 4-year-old Ghostzapper gelding is now trained by Tim Yakteen and will have Armando Aguilar aboard.
Race 6 (7 entered): Among several contenders in this restricted $20,000 claimer at one mile on dirt is 9-5 favorite Mici’s Express, who stretches out in distance after being claimed by O’Neill for $20,000 out of a third-place effort going 6 ½ furlongs April 20. He’ll have Tiago Pereira aboard. Damazio (3-1), trained by Jeff Mullins, most recently was second to a next-out winner in a similar event March 16.
Race 7 (8 entered with 3 also-eligibles): A first-level allowance for California-bred 3-year-old fillies at 6 ½ furlongs on turf, debut winner Tight Squeeze is a lukewarm 3-1 favorite for trainer John Sadler. She’ll have top turf jockey Hector Berrios in the irons. Wind Speed (4-1), trained by Sean McCarthy, also exits a debut win sprinting on turf. She’ll break from the rail under Tyler Baze.
Race 8 (10 entered): This is a $20,000 maiden-claiming event at six furlongs on dirt. Pegged as the 8-5 program favorite is Petite Ange, a 14-start maiden who was claimed by trainer-owner Ryan Hanson two starts back. She’ll have Baze aboard. Her main threat is Dixie Allure (7-2), trained by Hector Palma, who drops in class following a decent fourth-place finish in a $32,000 maiden-claimer March 17. Dixie Allure will get a five-pound weight break as apprentice Welfin Orantes is set to ride.
Race 9 (9 entered): A wide-open field of nine fillies and mares go one mile on turf in this $25,000 claimer. Empress Ellie, who was recently transferred to Mullins from trainer Peter Miller, is a tepid 3-1 favorite. The six-time winner will have Berrios aboard for the first time. Other key contenders include Big Mama Sue (7-2), Super Ellie (4-1) and Lady Montclaire (5-1).
