Churchill Downs, Race 2 – 05/29/2023

CD2:052923 – #3 Gewurztraminer (try saying that fast three times!) went to the lead shortly after leaving the gate and set reasonable fractions of 23.11 and 46.87 before pulling away to hit the wire first, five lengths clear of his nearest pursuer. The final time was 59.12 which equated to a ho-hum Equibase Speed Fig of 70. Jack Gilligan was the winning jock for trainer John Ennis who is also part owner in this Collected colt that they only paid $2,500 for as a yearling (82/83). No one got rich at the window as he paid a meager $5.12 for $2W tickets. Our pick – #5 Kennel Club – broke slowly and ran at the rear of the pack throughout, but finally made a nice run down the lane and came just a bit shy of earning third place. Lastly, a big shout out to Game of Silks owner ‘charbo’ who earned 0.2754 ETH for the victory. Learnings – Gewurztraminer had put in three workouts since his debut race back in late April at Keeneland, each progressively faster with his latest being a bullet, three furlong effort.
