Churchill Downs, Race 3 – 05/26/2023
By 2YO EdgeMan
CD3:052623 – The ‘Wavy Haired Wonder’ – Steve Asmussen – saddled his second baby winner in as many days at CD as #1 Sharp Tune broke clean, made the front before the turn and had it her way from there to the wire to score in 58.98 seconds. Her EBSF checking in at a tidy 82. Florent Geroux rode her confidently as she was much the best in this field of eight juvenile fillies, even after rolling through an opening quarter mile in 22.27. Starting at morning line odds of 6/1 when we picked her, ultimately she went off as the odds on favorite to pay a stingy $3.66 for all $2W tickets. Do you think that the word of the 2YO EdgeMan is starting to spread like wildfire? It kinda looks like it is to me. #8 Foolish Front Fifi traveled well in the lane to get up to be the bridesmaid, but she never really threatened the handy winner. Learnings – Clearly she was ‘warm on the board’ and I really liked the work pattern that Steve had drilled into her. He could have kept her down in TX and run her there, but he thought enough of this filly to ship her north to Kentucky where the money is excellent in these two-year-old maiden specials.
Tomorrow brings more 2YO MSW racing action under the Twin Spires as Race 3 is restricted to youngsters that were auctioned or RNAed for $50,000 or less. Our ‘Picks, Plays and Pontification’ piece is already up on this fantastic website, so please be like all the other brilliant Edgies and go check it out! Be safe and have loads of fun.
