Ship Cadet sails to a debut win under Irad Ortiz Jr. (Chelsea Durand)

BEL2:051223 – Congratulations to Mike Maker, all of the owners and Irad Ortiz, Jr. for winning this race with #7 Ship Cadet. He let #1 Twisted Filigree and my pick #2 Mourne Mountains blaze the first quarter over the lawn in a snappy 21.93 seconds. The race champ then made his move approaching the top of the lane and earned the lead inside the ¼ pole before striking the wire ¾ lengths in front of Twisted Filigree who really stayed on quite nicely. The tote board showed $8.20 in the $2W column and the timer was stopped at 57.47, equating to an impressive 86 Equibase Speed Figure. Learnings – Maker / I. Ortiz, Jr. is a formidable force. Also, watch for Twisted Filigree next out. Not only did he go fast the first quarter, but he galloped out strongly, even gaining the lead back before the end of the straight.
