BEL1:051123 – Very pleased to have picked our first winner of the young season – #7 Cynane – jumped out quickly to the lead and was never headed as she won by 2 ¾ very easy lengths. Javier Castellano needed to give her little to no encouragement as this filly was full of run and much the best in a very talented field. She posted a solid 82 Equibase Speed Fig in covering the grassy 5/8 mile in 57.61 seconds. Her backers were pleased, too (hopefully you were included) as this filly paid $11.40 for $2W tickets. We are happy for winning trainer Tom Morley and all of her owners, but really ecstatic for Spendthrift Farm to see their tremendously promising debut sire – Omaha Beach – put up his very first winner (many more will certainly follow). Learnings – First-Crop sires are always dangerous in the early spring, especially ones as classy as Omaha Beach. Also, #6 Marco T. was running very well through the lane and we’ll be watching for her to run back.
CD2:051123 – As straightforward as the race at Belmont was (above), this one was complicated. Immediately out of the gate, the runner with the second shortest odds – #10 Girls Weekend – broke violently to the outside rail before Loveberry could coax her back on course, but by this time, her hopes of visiting the Winners’ Circle were dashed. #6 Too Fast For You broke clean and fast and secured a contested lead going into the turn and was able to hold this lead til the last 100 yards when she was overtaken by the winner – #5 Closing Act – who launched an impressive, prolonged stretch drive to get up by a neck at the wire. #3 Foolish Front Fifi (by another 1CS from Spendthrift Farm – Coal Front) split horses late to narrowly miss the first-place money. The race champ paid $13.94 while dashing the 4 ½ furlongs on the dirt track in 52.89 seconds, which equated to an 80 EBSF. Our pick – #1 V V’s Dream scratched. Learnings – Steve Asmussen can flat train these babies and Tyler Gaffalione can ride them with the best. Additionally, Munnings is a terrific sire, especially with the young fillies.
Back at you soon with our ‘Picks, Plays and Pontification’ for Belmont’s second race on Friday. We corralled a nice winner today, let’s build some moment off of it and pick a bunch more, my smart Edgies.
