LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Seven weeks in advance of the $5 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I), Sierra Leone, winner of the Risen Star (GII), closed as the 7-1 favorite in Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) with champion 2-year-old Fierceness the 9-1 second betting choice.

“All Other 3-Year-Olds” closed as the 11-1 third betting option. Japan’s Saudi Derby (GIII) winner Forever Young (JPN) (12-1); Champagne (GI) and Rebel (GII) winner Timberlake (12-1); Remsen (GII) and Fountain of the Youth (GII) winner Dornach (13-1); Gotham (GIII) winner Deterministic (16-1); allowance winner Conquest Warrior (16-1); and Southwest winner Mystik Dan (16-1) were next in the open betting pool.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, offered for a 26th consecutive year, enables bettors to wager on possible Kentucky Derby contenders in advance of America’s greatest at odds that could be more attractive than those available on the day of the race. The $5 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (GI) for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds will be run for the 150th consecutive year on Saturday, May 4.

In the lone Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which was conducted concurrently with the KDFW Pool 5, swift allowance winner Impel closed as the 7-1 favorite over champion 2-year-old filly Just F Y I, who was 8-1.

Betting on all future wagers over the three-day period was $458,269.

Total handle for the KDFW pool – the fifth of six scheduled wagering pools in advance of the 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby – was $334,581 ($246,076 in the Win pool and $85,506 in Exactas). Betting on the Oaks Future Wager totaled $69,717 ($48,334 in the Win pool and $21,384 in Exactas). The Oaks/Derby Double, which requires bettors to correctly select the winners of both the $1.5 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI) on May 3 and the next day’s Derby, handled $53,971.

Through the first four pools, a total of $1,676,353 has been bet on Derby future wagers, a 16% increase from last year’s $1,444,099.

The year’s sixth and final Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool is set for Thursday, April 4 through Saturday, April 6. Different from the first five pools of the KDFW, Pool 6 will close prior to the first Road to the Kentucky Derby Championship Series race on April 6.
