Cupids Claw Wins the Tokyo City Cup Stakes
OBS graduates scored a graded stakes doubleheader at Santa Anita on Sunday after a 1-2-3 sweep of the My Dear Girl at Gulfstream on Saturday.
Gary Barber, Tom Kagele and Madaket Stables LLC’s C Z Rocket pressed the pace in the $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2), wore down the leader in the lane and was best by a head. Fellow OBS graduate Collusion Illusion (April ’19) checked in third. That’s two straight graded stakes wins for the 6-year-old Florida-bred son of City Zip, trained by Peter Miller, now 22-9-1-2 with $551,641 in earnings. At the 2016 June Sale, he turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 before he was purchased out of the Stephens Thoroughbred consignment for a then sale record $800,000. watch his under tack video
Flawless Racing, Masino Racing Stable. Brian Flanagan and Michael Jarvis’ Cupid’s Claws stepped into stakes company for the first time in the $101,000 Tokyo City Cup Stakes (G3), and the 5-year-old gelded son of Kitten’s Joy rallied on the turn, took command in the stretch and drew off to a 7-1/4 length victory. Consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, to the 2017 April Sale, he breezed a quarter in :21 3/5 before he was sold for $90,000. Daniel Pita’s Princess Secret led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of Saturday’s $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes at Gulfstream, charging wide on the turn, collaring front-running fellow OBS graduate Restofthestory (April ’20) turning for home, battling her the length of the stretch and scoring by a neck. Big Rings (June ’20) settled for third. It’s the second straight stakes win for the 2-year-old Florida-bred filly by Khozan, consigned by Journeyman Bloodstock Services, Inc. (Brent & Crystal Fernung), Agent, to the 2019 October Selected Yearling Sale and sold to Manuel Pita for $30,000. West Point Thoroughbreds and Marvin Delfiner’s Jaxon Taveler was unveiled by trainer Steve Asmussen on Friday at Pimlico in a six furlong maiden special weight dash. The 2-year-old colt by Munnings broke on top, set the pace, was turned loose after turning for home and galloped to a ten length victory.
