Laura’s Light Shines Bright in the Blue Norther

December 31, 2019

ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 29, 2019)–Gary Barber’s Laura’s Light broke running and never looked back in Sunday’s $75,000 Blue Norther Stakes at Santa Anita, winning by 3 ¼ lengths under Abel Cedillo.  Trained by Peter Miller, the 2-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Constitution got a mile on turf in 1:35.18.

“Pete told me to play the break,” said Cedillo, who registered his third win of the afternoon.  “It looked like there was other speed in there and if they went, he said to let them go and if they didn’t, to go ahead and put her on the lead.  So, my plan was to break and go!”

A first-out maiden special weight winner sprinting on Tapeta at Golden Gate Fields Nov. 2, Laura’s Light was sold privately and was then second at 24-1 in the one mile turf Jimmy Durante Stakes at Del Mar on Nov. 30.

Off as the 5-2 favorite today in a field of nine 2-year-old fillies, she paid $7.00, $4.00 and $2.80.

Out of the Muqtarib mare Light of a Star, Laura’s Light now has two wins from three starts and with the winner’s share of $49,320, she increased her earnings to $87,320.

Irish-bred Croughavouke rallied from next to last mid-way on the far turn to be second by a half length over Blue Sky Baby and paid $4.60 and $3.40 while off at 9-1 with Umberto Rispoli up.

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Blue Sky Baby, who sat second throughout, held third by a head over Parkour and paid $9.20 at odds of 21-1.

Fractions on the race were 23.73, 47.54, 1:11.72 and 1:23.32.
