ARCADIA, Calif.—A disappointing ninth going long on turf in his most recent start, Kirk and Judy Robison’s homebred Giver Not a Taker returns to a sprint versus statebreds on the main track Saturday as he heads a field of seven babies going seven furlongs in the $175,000 Golden State Juvenile at Santa Anita.

A part of the lucrative CTBA-sponsored Golden State Series, the Golden State Juvenile is for eligible California-bred or sired 2-year-olds.

A rollicking 7 ¾ length winner in a Cal-bred maiden special weight in his 5 ½ furlong debut Aug. 14, Giver Not a Taker then rallied for a most impressive 2 ¼ length win going six panels in the statebred I’m Smokin Stakes at Del Mar Sept. 9.

Off at 5-1 in his third start, the Grade III Zuma Beach Stakes at one mile on turf here Oct. 9, Giver Not a Taker was never a factor and checked in ninth, beaten 15 ½ lengths by Kentucky-bred buzzsaw Packs a Wahlop who is headed for the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Nov. 4 at Keeneland.

Providing there is no “Zuma hangover,” Giver Not a Taker, who is based at San Luis Rey Downs with Peter Miller, looms a potential standout on Saturday with regular rider Jose Valdivia, Jr. aboard.

Close in his first two starts sprinting, trainer Jeff Bonde’s Golf Drama took a big step forward in his third start, breaking his maiden going six furlongs at Los Alamitos by four lengths on Sept. 23.  A chestnut colt by Smiling Tiger out of the Gotham City mare She’s So Vain, Golf Drama, who is owned by Rusty Brown and Mark Stanton, would appear to have ample upside as he approaches his fourth start with Tyler Baze up.

Unbeaten in three starts, trainer Rafael DeLeon’s Chismosa heads a field of seven 2-year-old fillies going seven panels in Saturday’s $175,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes at Santa Anita.

By California’s Top Gun stallion Clubhouse Ride out of the Cat Dreams mare You Can Dream, Chismosa, whose most recent triumph came in the

Away slowly in her five-furlong debut versus statebred maiden fillies July 23, Chismosa recovered quickly and won going away by 1 ¼ lengths.  Off at 6-1 in the CTBA Stakes going 5 ½ furlongs on Aug. 7, Chismosa hopped slightly at the break, was quickly into stride and came away for an impressive 3 ½ length score.

Off as the 2-1 favorite in the Generous Portion, she opened up by six lengths at the top of the lane and cruised to a 1 ¾ length win.

Edgar Payeras riding back for the third straight time, Chismosa will be looking for her fourth consecutive win as she approaches the Golden State Juvenile Fillies with a tidy bankroll of $190,500.

Third, beaten four lengths by Chismosa three starts back in the CTBA Stakes at Del Mar, trainer Brian Koriner’s Sell the Dream comes off a pair of outstanding second place finishes versus open company in one mile turf stakes.

Second, beaten a half-length by highly regarded Comanche Country in the Grade III Surfer Girl Stakes here on Oct. 9, Sell the Dream was second, beaten 1 ¼ lengths by the same filly in Del Mar’s Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 10.

A first-out maiden winner going five furlongs on grass here June 10, Sell the Dream’s connections are hoping she can replicate her outstanding turf form going seven furlongs on dirt this Saturday when ridden for the first time by Hector Berrios.

A California-bred daughter of Munnings out of the Run Away and Hide mare Enayat Alsalam, Sell the Dream is owned by Edward Brown, Rusty Klein and Phil Lebherz.

First post time for a 10-race card that will include seven stakes on Saturday is at 1 p.m.
