Emily Shields

February 14, 2020

Emily Shields knew by age 10 that she wanted to work in horse racing, and has dedicated her life to pursuing that dream. The Arizona-born writer and photographer grew up in California and attended the University of Kentucky before returning to the Golden State, where she still resides.
Long before she was able to get her hands on real racehorses, Shields developed SIMHorseRacing.com, which remains one of the biggest and most realistic virtual racing games on the web. Shields started as a hotwalker at Santa Anita in 2003, then learned to groom under the tutelage of Dallas Stewart and later Brad Cox. She started writing for the California Thoroughbred magazine in 2006, and began photographing for the Daily Racing Form in 2011. She freelances for TVG, Thoroughbred Racing Commentary, the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association, and the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders.
Shields has ridden Hall of Famer Lava Man and hotwalked the likes of Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo and Eclipse Award champions Declan’s Moon and Acclamation. She visited 27 different racetracks in 2018 alone.
